The Pros and Cons of Porcelain Veneers: Are They Right for You?

A popular and simple way to quickly improve the look of your smile is with porcelain veneers. Veneers look like natural teeth, but are actually just thin layers of porcelain that your dentist places over the front part of your tooth.

Veneers are an ideal solution to the following dental issues:

  • Chipped or worn down teeth
  • Large gaps in between your teeth
  • Stained teeth that can’t be helped by whitening or bleaching
  • Misshapen teeth

If you have any of the issues listed above and would like to improve your smile, then veneers might be the right solution. In this article, we’ll discuss the pros and cons of veneers so that, with your dentist, you can make an informed decision about the best way to improve your smile.

Pros of Porcelain Veneers

1 They look natural

Porcelain veneers are a great way to improve your smile. Each veneer will be colored to match the look you want for your teeth. Veneers are a quick and easy way to whiten teeth that have heavy stains.

Veneers are also shaped to match the natural look of your teeth. At Bragg Dental, this begins with a thorough examination of the teeth and gums to determine the best shape, size, and symmetry. We work closely with you to create just the right look, even using a wax replica of your smile so we can view your design together and make decisions.

2 They are easy to place

Our process is very simple for placing porcelain veneers and involves the following steps:

  • To make space for the veneers, we remove about one millimeter of enamel from each tooth’s surface.
  • Next, we take an impression of the inside of your mouth and form a mold.
  • Then, we send the mold and detailed instructions to our dental laboratory technicians to fabricate your custom restorations for the best appearance, fit, bite and speech function.
  • Once the veneers are prepared, we will bond them to your teeth with a special cement to ensure your veneer endures.

We can usually place your veneers in as little as two visits– the first to take the moldings and the second to place the veneers.

3 They are made to last

Because each veneer is custom made to fit perfectly to your teeth, we are able to create very strong bonds to your teeth. The porcelain material we use is brittle, but when firmly bonded to the tooth it becomes very strong and durable. They won’t fall out at random or embarrassing times, and your porcelain veneers will last for years and decades to come.

4 They are easy to care for

You can treat porcelain veneers just like your natural teeth. That means cleaning is as simple as brushing and flossing. You never need to remove them (and you couldn’t even if you tried). They are also very difficult to stain, which means they will maintain their white color for a long time. You can also eat and drink the same kind of foods with porcelain veneers that you would with your natural teeth.

Cons of Porcelain Veneers

1 The procedure is irreversible

Porcelain veneers are irreversible because we must remove some of the enamel on the front of your teeth in order to apply the veneer. Once the veneer is bonded to the tooth, you won’t be able to take them off. Fortunately, people love the way their veneers look, and they don’t want to remove them any way! Should your veneer fall off for any reason, it will need to be replaced.

2 They aren’t good for teeth grinders

Although veneers are strong, they can be damaged by grinding teeth, chewing ice, or biting your fingernails. If you struggle with those habits, you’ll need to work on stopping them. If you can’t stop clenching or grinding your teeth, we might suggest wearing a plastic dental night guard while sleeping.
